Some years ago I did a course in sound production and I was required to write an essay about the Western Swing genre. I stumbled across the essay recently and decided to post it and have done so here on TramTownLarge. Boy, that first paragraph is a flowery bunch of words!
One thing, I wish the Wikipedia entry on Western Swing was available when I wrote my essay.
Also, on Wikipedia, the Onion had a great item last week: Wikipedia Celebrates 750 Years Of American Independence

Tim Lambert has been carrying on about DDT for quite some time. J. F. Beck has done a lovely debunking job on Tim. It looks like science may win this one 44 years on from Silent Spring.

Annemieke Mein's work has apparently not been shown in the Sale gallery until recently because of the claim that "it was craft not art". What a lot of nonsense! Even the current gallery director is dismissive and probably a little irritated that the exhibition attracted a record crowd.
"Look, Annameike is a very, very popular artist and no-one can doubt the amount of effort and skill that goes into creating her works," he said.
"She's obviously quite a well-known Gippsland identity, she was on the front cover of the Gippsland phone book a little while ago and of course she was awarded an Order of Australia some years ago for her contribution to the arts."
You can get an idea of what she does here but, even with high quality prints, nothing can come even close to the experience of seeing it up close. Look out for future exhibitions of her work.

That woman who does the traffic on 3LO just said "On the Calder Highway near Bendigo you'll have to slow down for a fallen tree in the city-bound lanes". Not much information there, is there? Which side of Bendigo and bound for which city?
At least she now talks about clockwise and anti-clockwise on the ring road.

Most of us have done some analogue (cassette, 1/4" tape, vinyl, et al) transfers to digital format for our pre-loved audio archives. My pathologist recommends this mob. She reckons about $A40 per album for clean-up and transfer to CD -- she was very happy with the result!

I dunno. I keep thinking X-Box, but in trying to work out what I reckon about the Microsoft "iPod Killer" I keep thinking: Design, Marketing, Product, Licensing, Coverage, Back Catalogues, independents, Software, Digital Rights Management, OEM's -- I dunno what to think. Very interesting space to be watching later this year. Zune.

The SMH reports here on a "Randomized Controlled Trial" comparing four diets conducted by a bunch of people with letters after their names. It included all of "129 overweight or obese young adults" who undertook the diets for all of 12 weeks. From this they drew conclusions about diseases that tend to appear late in life. We have way too many scientists in this world™.

Category: Health
The following was presented as a joke on one of my regular reads but, certainly in Australia, it is simply a statement of truth.
TWO PATIENTS
Two patients limp into two different medical clinics with the same complaint. Both have trouble walking and appear to require a hip replacement. The first patient is examined within the hour, is x-rayed the same day and has a time booked for surgery the following week. The second patient sees his family doctor after waiting a week for an appointment, then waits six weeks to see a specialist, then gets an x-ray, which isn't reviewed for another month and finally has his surgery scheduled for three months from then. Why the different treatment for the two patients? The first is a golden retriever. The second is a senior citizen.
As an addendum, the second patient would, in the meantime, have had blood tests and the doctor would have phoned him up to tell him he has high cholesterol levels. The doctor would not even remember the hip problem.
I am astounded that we can spend so much on health care and still arrive at such poorly perceived outcomes.

Under the banner "“Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Vote!”, Arizona has come up with an encouragement to voters:
A proposal to award $1 million in every general election to one lucky resident, chosen by lottery, simply for voting — no matter for whom — has qualified for the November ballot.
I doubt that the idea will get up but it's certainly an interesting approach.

There's an interesting article over at Reason.org about the so-called dust-to-dust costs of owning a hybrid versus a normal petrol vehicle. Guess which wins!
ALSO, at the Weekly Standard the following claims are made for hybrid fuel consumption claims:
For example, a 2004 Toyota Prius got 35 miles per gallon in city driving, off 42 percent from its EPA rating of 60 mpg. The 2003 Honda Civic averaged 26 mpg, off 46 percent from its advertised 48 mpg. And the Ford Escape small sport utility vehicle managed 22 mpg, falling 33 percent short of its 33 mpg rating.

I'm guessing that this is trying to say "John Howard and George W. Bush will be best friends for life". My reason for posting it, though, is the amazing (and completely unnecessary) apostrophe position between the i and e: besti'es.

A long time back I used to queue for tickets for "rock concerts". I queued many weeks for David Bowie's first Australian tour (as featured in this film.
I was only 1 of 5 (all of whom I knew) to queue at The Comedy Theatre (irony) for 24 hours to get tickets to Leonard Cohen's first Australian tour. I'm now thinking about going to see Dwight Yoakam and The HalfWho.
At my age I'd still find overnight queuing quite appealing but there's nowhere to queue. So, instead, I get this.
How does that work?

Most TramTown readers will probably have heard of the prank played by the children who work at the Oz whereby they sent a chapter from a Patrick White novel to a variety of publishers and it was both unrecognised and rejected by all. The obvious conclusion is that the publishers are illiterate swine. Fortunately, the article goes on to consider other conclusions. This in particular met with my approval:
[Nicholas Hudson of Hudson Publishing] told Inquirer he recalled reading the manuscript and was being kind in his letter. "I was trying to be polite. I thought is was pretentious fart-arsery. I don't like White".
"Obviously, one has to ask, how the hell did this guy get to be a great literary figure? Right from the start, people were saying: 'Is this really as good as people are saying?"'
The interesting thing is that the novel "clinched his Nobel Prize in Literature in 1973, with the judges describing it as one of his most accomplished works". Well perhaps not so interesting, after all, Jimmy Carter and Yasser Arafat both got Nobel prizes.
Read the whole thing (the article not the novel).
