I had missed this piece by Mary Bolling in Tuesday's small paper about organised sporting activity...
A group of children have been nabbed for running around a park and threatened with fines by their council.
Follow it up please, Mary! These council fools cannot be allowed to get away with such nonsense.

An item over at Samizdata makes an observation about The Economist that I agree with wholeheartedly. I think that the magazine has been creeping further and further left for at least the last ten years and many of its readers have not noticed and still think of it as centre-right.

The following Youtube of Lawrence Lessig, the Creative Commons man, is well worth watching (IMHO):

My 12yo is in a production of The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood at STAG. He would love to see some of his cousins in the audience this weekend or next weekend. Click through the link for details.

The New Zealand Centre for Political Research invited Nigella's old dad down to say a few words and this is the result. He included this piece of folk wisdom:
... The average annual temperature in Helsinki is less than 5ºC. That in Singapore is in excess of 27ºC – a difference of more than 22ºC. If man can successfully cope with that, it is not immediately apparent why he should not be able to adapt to a change of 3ºC, when he is given a hundred years in which to do so.
Say no more! It's a great read, Jack.

On a similar topic, a recent Sp!ked article talks of the notion of "peak oil" and how it may (or may not) affect us.

It looks like we're going to be getting a localised Top Gear. My suggestion for a celebrity guest: Doctor Karl to talk about his V8 Monaro.

I'm surprised that DB hadn't pointed out that Ira Levin died last week. My favourite Ira Levin work is a play called Veronica's Room. I don't believe it's ever been made into a film.
For those who don't know, Ira Levin wrote the stories for a number of films including Rosemary's Baby and The Stepford Wives.

One of my favourite podcasts is EconTalk. A recent example that is a must listen for anyone interested in the realities of user-pays-nothing-or-at-least-very-little health systems, as experienced broadly through out the western world, is Arnold Kling on the Economics of Health Care and the Crisis of Abundance. Well worth a listen! If you can't spare the ~hour then you might read some highlights at the link.

From page 38 of the Australian Electoral Commission's Scrutineers' Handbook:
Ticks or crosses on a House of Representatives ballot paper will render it informal. However, a ballot paper that represents the required sequence by roman numerals (I, II, III, ...) or by ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd, …) or by letters (A, B, C, …) can be accepted as formal.
It would be quite a bit of fun to mark up the senate ticket below-the-line with roman numerals. Here is an aid. Am I just a trouble maker?

I knew nothing about the St Kilda (SA) Tram Museum, that in itself worries me. Semi, did you know about this? Gotta find a conference in Adelaide now. (thanks PTUA President)

I don't know much about cricket and don't really care for it much as a sport but Sam Ward seems to know quite a bit. He has two articles of interest, here and here.

Your boy Joss Whedon (Buffy, Firefly et al) is back on the TV Series Job! Fawning, sycophantic article but the basic premise sounds interesting. Reminds me a bit of the PK Dick short story I've forgotten the name of. On the subject of Joss W I picked up this a few months back for about $10 at JB. Violent but well worth getting.

"BLADE RUNNER is one of the most important science-fiction movies of the 20th Century, appearing on more 'Top Five' sci-fi lists than any other film. With immeasurable influence on society for its futuristic depiction of a post-apocalyptic, dystopian world, the film perhaps is more powerful and relevant today than when it was made. In celebration of its 25th anniversary, director Ridley Scott (ALIEN, GLADIATOR, THELMA LOUISE and BLACK HAWK DOWN) has gone back into post production to create the long-awaited definitive new version, which has been brilliantly restored and remastered from original elements and scanned at 4K resolution. This version contains never-before-seen added/extended scenes, added lines, new and improved special effects, and an all-new 5.1 Dolby® Digital audio track. With the assistance of Sony's revolutionary CineAlta 4K D-Cinema Projection System [currently the only system in the world to project 4K DCI (Digital Cinema Initiative), Standard Cinema Content], BLADE RUNNER: THE FINAL CUT will be presented in the highest quality format currently available, ensuring that the film will look nothing short of spectacular."
Looks a cracker! Matinees for a change as well.

Here's one you might disagree with me on, Jack. The Bolta gets a quote from John-Michael Howson on homophobes in the Liberal party. Me, I'm with JMH all the way.
