Although I'm not a celebrity, I would've liked to have been photographed with my parents during my 15 minutes -- bit late for me I guess.

Mighty Optical Illusions has a great post with circular things today. Remember, though, they're not optical illusions, they just look like optical illusions.

According to a corollary of Godwin's Law, the argument against GM foods has just been lost by Margaret Fulton. Go the good guys!

Things I didn't know. He's a south-paw, smoking mac user. Gosh who would've thought.

My first reaction to this magnificent product was to wonder what we can't outsource to China...

Here are a couple of interesting post-mortems on the US election. The first is by P. J. O'Rourke, the second is by Ron Hart.

When the Marx Brothers were making A Night in Casablanca, Warner Brothers tried to stop them using that title. Groucho responded. Great reading!

The owner and primary operator of The National UFO Reporting Center is getting a bit irritated at the number of prank calls he is receiving. As noted by PanicWatch:
Well Mr. Davenport, you're in the business of receiving made up stories and you get mad when people give you made up stories
PanicWatch is worth the price of admission on your reader/bookmarks right there!

Category: October
The folks at NASA GISS must have thought all of their Christmases had come at once when their spreadsheets told them that the October just gone was the hottest one on record. The problem is, that because it reflected their strange reality so well, they didn't do a bit of checking before publishing and putting out a press release. It turns out that somebody had pasted September data in for the whole of Russia.
Over at Steve McIntyre's Climate Audit site there is a post titled Did Napoleon Use Hansen's Temperature Data? with this:
It's colder in Russia in October than in September, as Napoleon found out to his cost in 1812.
I suspect Hitler discovered something similar in 1941.

Tram Town has been very quite about the US election to date so I feel morally obliged to say something. One of the great things about the US election process (as much as I understand it) is that as well as contributing to the election of the Top Job they also get to vote for city officials, a whole swag of other stuff and "proposals". Three proposals I noticed is that MA has now banned dog racing but de-criminalised personal marijuana use (couldn't easily find a link, sorry) and CA has voted for a Cracker of a Train -- jeez, I hope that I live for another dozen or so years. (I eventually got to BART though.

Now I for one don't think that Y2K was so much a scam as an overreaction to a relatively simple and inherently manageable risk. Having said that, I love Ian Plimer's use of it to stir up the troops at a Sydney Mining Club lunch yesterday with his assertion "If you thought Y2K was a scam, you wait for this one". He was, of course, referring to the Kruddster's Emissions Trading Scheme™. It is unlikely to be either simple or inherently manageable. My guess is that both big finance and organised crime (insofar as they are clearly distinguishable) are going to be the only beneficiaries of the whole thing.

Or does it just look like one. I would've liked Wolf to pass his hand through her and maybe some close-ups/varied camera angles. Still, interesting use of technology.
I'm none too bright but, off the top of my head, can't think of a useful application. Cool, though. Didn't Graham do something similar in the late sixties for GTV demonstrating a 'proof-o-concept' of broadcasting colour pictures over monochrome TV -- I remember something along these lines.

UPDATE: Not a hologram apparently, a tomogram. Hmmm, thought as much.

Music of the electronic variety even. Early days through to the 1970's. Likely, worth a listen.
