In a fascinating gallery over at the New York Times, a small sample of Olympic athletes' dimensions is published. I did a few calcs and found that (so far as we can take any notice of such a small sample) the range of BMIs for the group was from 17 (underweight) to 44 (morbidly obese). The average was 29 (overweight) and the median was 25 (overweight, just).
You have to wonder if this says more about the athletes or the usefulness of BMI as a measure.
Thanks to Sandy Szwarc for the pointer.
